yeah tumblr’s shitty but i ain’t joking when i say being on here helped me grow from an ignorant internet “troll” to a mature and understanding adult. it educated me on a lot of things like racism, misogyny, abuse, etc. i met some of the best and closest friends on here and we all grew together. these are issues and topics i never would have encountered on fb or myspace or any other social media i frequented as a teen and young adult.
Yeah it’s cool to pretend you hate this site despite logging in via oxygen mask every day like a coward but I’m gonna miss this site when it tanks. Never have I interacted with a piece of media that is this entertaining and outrageous. It’s historical.
Tumblr’s polarity is truly only outmatched by Twitter to me. There are amazing and creative people here and then there are demons and scoundrels and the insane amount of micro-societies created by both would make any sociologist have a field day. You are always two degrees of separation away from mind-blowing confusion if you click any link on your dashboard. The constant stimulation…is terrifying.
Despite all the law enforcement resources expended, empirical research on the dangers or benefits of erotic services ads has been sparse. But a new study provides strong evidence that when law enforcement closes down sites like Craigslist or Redbook, women die.
The September 2017 study, authored by West Virginia University and Baylor University economics and information systems experts, analyzes rates of female homicides in various cities before and after Craigslist opened an erotic services section on its website. The authors found a shocking 17 percent decrease in homicides with female victims after Craigslist erotic services were introduced.
The data does not provide a single clear explanation as to why female homicide rates drop so steeply, Scott Cunningham, one of the paper’s authors, told ThinkProgress. It’s possible, for example, that when Craigslist opens erotic services ads, some women in abusive domestic situations decide to become sex workers, move out, and so escape violent homicide at the hands of their spouses or boyfriends.
The most likely explanation, though, Cunningham says, is that sex workers simply make up a huge percentage of female homicide victims. When sex workers are safer, female homicide rates drop significantly.

Once sex workers move indoors, they are much safer for a number of reasons, Cunningham said. When you’re indoors, “you can screen your clients more efficiently. When you’re soliciting a client on the street, there is no real screening opportunity. The sex worker just has to make the split second decision. She relies on very limited and complete information about the client’s identity and purposes. Whereas when a sex worker solicits indoors through digital means, she has Google, she has a lot of correspondence, she can ask a lot of questions. It’s not perfect screening, but it’s better.”

In theory, closing down advertising is supposed to reduce exploitation of women. In practice, when resources are taken away from people living on the edge of poverty, they have fewer options and are less able to protect themselves.
For all these reasons access to the Internet can transform the experience of sex work. Young women who have been able to screen clients using sites like Craigslist, “almost feel like this is a safe job because they have these tools,” DiAngelo said.
Sex workers report that free online advertising makes them safer. There is now data showing that erotic services ads significantly decrease female homicide rates. So, will law enforcement back down and allow these sites to operate again?

Y’all need to stop saying shit like “songs with the same bpm”
Beats per minute is a unit. The word you’re looking for is tempo.
If two songs have the same tempo, their bpm are equivalent.
You wouldn’t say two people of the same height have “the same inches.” You would say height. So stop saying two songs have “the same bpm” when you can just say tempo
I’m an assistant band director don’t argue with me
I have a music degree and taught for over a decade. You can say BPM or tempo it’s basically all the same. Don’t let the classical music snobs get you down
Oh no, I made a post voicing a pet peeve of mine and suddenly I’m a “classical music snob” even though I’ve been playing baroque flute for over a decade professionally…
Yeah I mean… Well there it is
I’m now going to refer to things that are the same height as having the same inches. I like that.
Tempo indications (either in-score or in reference/conversation) are often not as specific as bpm. You can technically say that two songs are the same tempo, for example, Allegretto vivace (fairly brisk and lively), without their bpms matching exactly, or without their having consistent bpms (plenty of songs do speed up and slow down). If you’re specifying bpm, you probably have a reason to; you might be trying to make a mashup, where it’d be inconvenient if not disastrous to combine two songs with equivalent tempi but slightly different bpms.
Analogically, if two people are the “same height”, they might be level to the naked eye or to a relatively well-calibrated measuring instrument, and they can for example both be pallbearers at the same funeral, but you’d probably want to know how many millimeters tall each one was if they were both going to, say, stand on a level surface under the surprise shot of a deadly horizontal laser (and we might try to stand behind the one with the extra 2mm).
I appreciate not only that you explained this in a way that I, a non musical fool, can understand, but also your incredibly gratuitous and yet desperately needed use of deadly horizontal lasers.
I’m making jokes but like this is literally so crazy — as tho like Sexual encounters between adults is something we all need to be protected from by corporations… as tho the whole point of Facebook wasn’t started as a way to evaluate women’s sexual attractiveness
Sex workers told everyone that FOSTA/SESTA was the beginning and justification of a substantial amount of internet surveillance + control and that got totally ignored.
also note “sexual preference”! Even saying you’re gay can be construed as a violation of these rules!
