The Vox article that I was interviewed for is up and running, and it contains some serious fuckign information about this whole fiasco.
Information that tumblr just straight up refused to provide to its userbase at all.
Unsurprisingly to those of us watching this website deteriorate over the last year, this full content purge and ban has been in progress for a solid 6 months. The date got moved up because of the child porn thing, but it was always coming for us.
Equally unsurprising: Tumblr’s management and ownership are absolutely destroying the actual staff working on it. The company has been hemoragghing senior staff without so much as a token attempt to keep them in place. So the drops in site quality are real, and wil probably only be getting worse.
Truly astonishing is the fact that apparently this crap was supposed to “double” the userbase by the end of next year. Boy, howdy, that’s not gonna work out well for them.

This banning of nsfw content could not come at a worse time.
It’s the beginning of December. December and January are a notoriously difficult time for sexworkers. Their clients, tippers, and customers are typically away, busy spending their money and time with loved ones or other affairs. Typically only the most dedicated of regulars will show up for their favorite sexworkers during the holidays.
Last December I got by with making barely $1000 the entire month. All of that went to rent and what little groceries I could get, not to mention I was moving at the time.
December is a brutal time for sexworkers who receive far less attention and income because of the holidays. Many of us are losing thousands of followers because of tumblr, which means less exposure, which means less income to survive with.
It’s incredibly important that you support whatever sexworkers you enjoy the content of, because it’s likely that a lot of us will be in dire straits, especially for those that are losing their followers from this purge.

no other platform has the right format for me to just randomly barf actual thoughts, joaks, and genuine creative content all in the same breath. i dont know how to compartmentalize
every other platform you gotta be a real person. Here you are you’re icon and username and whatever your hyperfixation is at the current moment
on tumblr you can make a post that just says “minecraft” and get 50k notes, where on twitter you have to steal tweets and instagram you have to be hot. tumblr is more like a bunch of kids let loose in walmart where there are no rules and the only god is a bald swedish man
